Skills, Hobbies, Interests.

Looking at the person, my skills, hobbies, and interests are wide ranging, as well as evergrowing. This page focuses on the third major skill/interest, seeing as the first two are actively on display as programming and music production. The third major skill/interest is language learning!

I've been very interested in language learning, seeing as it is an open path to interacting with and experiencing different cultures, as well as a way of taking on a whole new worldview.

The languages that I'm currently learning are Japanese, Spanish, and French.

French・Français

I came to learn French from a very young age (since I was about 8 years old), and in contrast to my current disposition, I found myself disliking French from a very young age. As a young child, I found it to be a very different experience, one I was yet to tackle with confidence.

French proved to be a pain to understand, and as a consequence of this, I came to dislike it greatly. Due to this, however, I chose to explore different languages later on in life, which led me to discovering Japanese and my love for languages later on in life!

Additionally, French proved to be a great tool in deciphering and understanding how different languages work, as it was my comparative framework when learning both Spanish and Japanese, though more so with Spanish! It proved to be a great tool, and now, I've endeavored to relearn as much as I can so as to fully embrace my journey to become a polyglot!

Bonjour, tout le monde! Comment ça va? Je me sens trés bien maintenant!

Merci beucoup!

Spanish・Español

Spanish has been by far the easiest language that I have undertaken as I've been progressing in language learning. I found it easier to learn Spanish at first, but this can mainly be attributed to me having learnt French at a beginner level from a very young age.

I find that Spanish and French have very similar vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure. Additionally, the two languages played a role in the founding of the English language, setting aside Germany and Latin.

Having learnt Spanish at school as well for the last two years of high school, I found it much easier to get by, and made significant progress in such a short time!

¡Hola!

Language Advice

In terms of language advice, from an intermediate learner to another, I'd recommend a method known as "Comprehensive Input".

Y'know how you just "know" English? Spanish? Your "first language"? Maybe you were taught it, maybe not. But the majority of what you understand comes from Comprehensive Input. You didn't necessarily learn at a school, you absorbed it. You exposed yourself to it subconsciously, as a baby!

It is defined as "a language learning method where you listen to or read things in your target language that you mostly understand, even if you don’t know every word."

This kind of input helps your brain naturally pick up vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure through context...much like how children learn their first language! Instead of memorizing long vocabulary lists or grammar charts, you absorb the language by hearing and reading it in real use.

Watching shows with subtitles, listening to beginner podcasts, or reading simple books are all great ways to get comprehensible input. It works best when the content is interesting to you and when you’re actively paying attention.

To those looking to start a new language, I'd highly recommend this method, though it's also necessary to understand that each and every person has methods that work for them, and some that don't.

So feel free to experiment, and savor your language learning experience!
